ecently, I read an interesting interview with a woman named Marilyn Sherman in the journal of the National Speakers Association. The headline of the article got my attention: “Whose comfort zone are you in?”

She explained that some years ago she had had a secure and well-paid job as a corporate trainer, but that her dream was to become self-employed as a professional speaker. When she discussed it with her father, whom she considered her mentor, he asked her what she could count on if she went out on her own. Did she have any commitments from companies that wanted to engage her as a speaker? When she said no, he advised her against taking the plunge. Despite this, she plucked up all her courage and decided to turn her greatest dream into reality. Not long after, the company that she had thought would give her long-term security was sold and all its employees were forced to look for other jobs.

In the interview, Sherman recalled how she often told this story to her audiences when she spoke, following it up with a rhetorical question: “Can you imagine what would have happened if I’d stayed in my comfort zone, just because my father had said what a good job I had?” One day, a woman in the audience answered her: “If you’d stayed with that company, you’d have been living in your father’s comfort zone, not yours.”
